Dubai, with an area of 3,885 square kilometres, is the second largest Emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE is a union of seven Sovereign Sheikhdoms - Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ajman. The UAE is a Sovereign State within which each Emirate retains a degree of self administration. Abu Dhabi is the largest Emirate, and its ruler, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahayan, is the President of the UAE. The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum, is the Prime Minister and Vice-President. The UAE is a member of the United Nations and the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC). The UAE has 700 km of coastline, of which 100 km are on the Gulf of Oman. Along the Gulf coast there are offshore islands, coral reefs and salt marshes. Stretches of gravel plain and sandy desert characterise the inland region. To the east a range of mountains lies close to the Gulf of Oman and forms the backbone through the Mussandam Peninsula. The western interior of the UAE, most of it in Abu Dhabi, consists mainly of desert interspersed with oases.
In 2002 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai had a vision to create the city of the future. In doing this and creating a truly cosmopolitan and global society, an international community would be required, and so the Sheikh decided to allow foreign investors to purchase property on Dubai soil. Dubai and the UAE's future is focused upon creating a business and tourism environment second to none which centres around incoming foreign investment from commercial institutions and individual investors. The worlds only 6 star hotel, the Burj al Arab sits near Jumeriah Beach waterfront with numerous other luxury resorts and hotels spread along the coast. The standard of living in Dubai is very high and cosmopolitan. Dubai has a dry, sub-tropical climate with exceptionally hot summers (May-October) and high humidity near the coast, when temperatures can reach 45C, and mild winters (November to April) where the temperature is very pleasant, around 10C to 30C.
Although Dubai exports oil, it has never been just an oil-based economy. With only 10-15 years of oil reserves remaining, Dubai has turned to its historical talent for trading to ensure its future success. Dubai is the leading business centre in the Middle East and is the major entrepot for exporting to the Indian subcontinent, other Gulf States, Iran and Africa and the CIS States. Dubai is the exhibition capital of the Gulf and a strategic centre for business across the region.
