Saint Lucia is an island nation in the eastern Caribbean sea on the boundary with the Atlantic ocean and lies 24 miles south of Martinique and 21 miles north of Saint Vincent. It covers an area of 616 square kilometres and its population is estimated at 152,000. Saint Lucia enjoys a tropical climate and the average temperature varies from 25°C to 29°C.
Saint Lucia is one of the Windward Islands, named for Saint Lucy of Syracuse. It was first visited by Europeans in about the year 1500 and on 22nd February 1979 Saint Lucia became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations. English is the official language of Saint Lucia although many Saint Lucian’s also speak French and Spanish.
Saint Lucia's Tourist industry has increased in local economic importance as the market for worldwide bananas (previous main industry) has become more competitive. Saint Lucia tends to be popular due to its tropical weather, outstanding scenery and its large number of beaches and resorts. The capital city of Saint Lucia is Castries.
