Spain is situated in south-western Europe, bordering the Bay of Biscay, Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, and Pyrenees Mountains, southwest of France. It covers an area of 504,782 square kilometres and its population is estimated at over 40 million. The climate enjoys clear, hot summers in the interior, more moderate along the coast; cold winters in the interior, cooler along the coast.
Spain only achieved democracy in the 1980’s so compared to many of its European neighbours it is still an emerging nation. It is made up of 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities*; Andalucia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Ceuta*, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Cataluna, Comunidad Valenciana, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Melilla*, Murcia, Navarra, Basque Country. The autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla plus three small islands of Islas Chafarinas, Penon de Alhucemas, and Penon de Velez de la Gomera, administered directly by the Spanish central government, are all located along the coast of Morocco and are collectively referred to as Places of Sovereignty.
The capital city of Madrid is a major tourist destination, as is the second city of Barcelona. Spain is renowned for its landscape (mountains & beaches), its food and culture which are highly regionalised. The Spanish coastline (Costa’s) from Alicante to Cadiz is considered some of the most desirable coastline in Europe.
